Filming

FILMING:

We finally filmed our project on Wednesday 12th January. On the day of filming there was still heavy snow and ice on the ground, despite this we continued to film. We thought that this kind of weather would add to the atmosphere of the film. We found the perfect back ally as our location just which was only a couple of minutes from the college. We thought this location was perfect for quite a few reasons. Firstly because it fitted our criterea with the cobbled ground surface along with the red brick walls and some back gates which were boarded up and broken which added to the scene and atmosphare we were trying to give off. Secondly, with it being so near to college once we had finished filming if we needed any extra scenes or additional shots to do or we could easily re-visit the location which made it extremly convinient. We used the same actors as stated before, whice are; Patrick Mcadam, Cameron O'Donell, Alex Williams and Nicholas Whalley.
However we decided to change some of our previous plans and idea for the opening sequence so that everything looked correct and made since. Firstly, we decided that having our 'boss' dressed in a suit looking extremly wealthy and powerful looked out of place because he is only a small time drug lord and our previous look seemed more Hollywood. Instead we dressed him in jeans, casual shoes and a track jacket. After finishing the filming this looked very well and fitted in with our opening sequence perfect. We also changed the idea of him having a gun, but this was for several reason. First of all its extremly hard to buy/find a black repilca because of legal reason made by the police stopping people from using them in crime. Secondly, we didn't want to chance being stopped during our filming to explain to any passersby or incase we were reported. So inplace of the gun we decided to keep with our theme and the way we protrayed our 'boss' we would have him using a cricket bat instead, this also made it seem more British. As we have said before is was difficult with the snow because of the chanallenge of running throught it and making it look real. However this ended up adding to the scene/opening sequence and it also helped out when our main character (Patrick Macadam) falls over. When we watched some other British films (such as RocknRolla) we noticed that the 'henchmen' or 'thugs' in the films always seem to look east eurpean or actually are east european. Because of this we made Cameron O'Donell (Henchmen 1) wear a dark gray beanie hat along with a red jacket. This worked extremly well because he ended up looking like an east european and it also added to his 'hard man' look.

EDITING:

During our editing we used our previous skills from the prelim task and applied them to our final project. Our skills also improved dramatically and we found it easier toward the end, and also found out how to use more editing techniques such as, applying effects (black and white), using transitions(fade in) and applying titles(names). Through out our editing we cut down clips to fit with the music, split clips inorder to keep the useful footage, added the correct tempo of music to help add toward the atmosphare and added effects aswell as add transitions. At the beginning the editing was difficult and quite time consuming but as we went on it just got easier and now we feel very confident using Imovie software. We also made a rought cut to see if it all fitted and what needed changing such as, volume, music and lenght of clips. At first we had more of a thriller themed music which didnt fit well so we eventually found what we thought was the perfect music to our filming which had the right tempo and change in sound at certain point of the opening sequence that work extremly well.

Name of Film

Coming up with the name of the film actually turned out to be one of the hardest tasks in making and film and completing all the reasearch. What we wanted to acheive with our name was a catchy title thatwould draw in an audience, and in some way reveal what the theme of the film was going to be about. Here are some of the names we came up with:-

  • Wrong Choice

  • Redemption

After thinking about it for some time we finally settle for, Redemption. The reason for this was it has a significant meaning and link with the film itself. Redemption means; improving of someone/something, redeeming yourself for doing wrong and/or restoring the honnor of someone/something. The reason this meaning ties in with our film and the opening sequecne is that our film is about a man working for a small time drug lord who thinks he's big. But during the film the main character decides to go against his boss because he needs to pay back a loan shark who seems to have something over him. So throughout he has been stealing money slyly everytime he drops off the drug money. When the boss makes the main character give him the money in person, the drug lord sees there is money missing! Suddenly, the main character runs out of the house and down onto a back street with the two hench men following close behind. Towards the end of the opening sequence the main character falls, and the two henchmen catch him, knocking him out untill the boss appears with a cricket bat that he uses to hit the main character over the head with. But just before it reaches him, it all freezes and a voice over is heard ''Why did i let it get so bad?''. Then this all rewind and we see a clip of the beginning of the film where the main character is woken up during his sleep by the loan shark demanding for his money back, Fast! Then title comes up. So at some point during the film we will see that chase scene again, but it doesn't finish there because the boss doesn't end up hitting the main character in the head after all, but instead stops just before he hits his face. Then offers the main character at a chance of making up to him for stealing the money, hence the name Redemption.

Film institutions

We have researched the possibilties what film institution our film would be catorgarised in to. We already know that our film is going to be a British style film, so therefore it will be produced by a British production company. There are many films which are similar to ours, therefore they will more then likely be produced by the same film companies/producers that we would want to use to sell our film. If we were going to use a film company for our fil then it would probabaly be Summit Entertainment. We would choose this company for alot of reasons. Firstly because it produced Lock stock and tow smoking barrels, which is a film that we have analysed and researched alot. Another reason is because they have lots of other succesful action films. And the biggest reason is because it is a very sucessful film company making a profit on nearly all of its films.

The action genre

We both think that the action genre was a very good choice. We think this because in the top twenty box office figures it shows that action films have made huge profits. Another reason why we think that the action genre was a good choice is because when we produced our survey we found that action was one of the most popular genres. But one of the main reasons why we chose action as our genre is because the both of us really enjoy the genre. This is important because both of us will be extremly interested and enthusiastic about our project. However there are a few down sides to producing an action film. One of these are many action films are very expensive to produce therefore the final product has to be very successful in order to make a profit.

Box office figures

20.Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)$848,462,555

From this list we can see that many of the films fit into the action genre (spider man, avatar and the dark knight). These films have made lots of money which proves that the action genre is successful. So, with our film falling under the action genre we know that ours to should likely be successful. However with action films they are very expensive to produce. Therefore the film has to be very popular in order for it to make a profit. In addition to this, the majourity of the above films are hybrids, just like our film, which also proves that hybrids are extremly popular and sell very well.
