This an opening sequence from the film Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. We both think that this is a really good chase scene. We think this because it uses a number of different camera shots, which we will need to do in our opening sequence. Also in the film it has a very good theme tune which helps the film flow and it also builds up tension throughout. Also this short opening sequence creates lots of enigmas . These make the audience want to watch the rest of the film.
Another good thing about thing about the opening sequence is the use of characters. The main character in this part of the film, 'Jason Statham',(the market salesman). He is a really good fit for the role because of his london accent and his con man like appearance. Also the setting which they used in the film worked well. This is because it actually looks like a believable place where market men would stand and sell there knock of items.

What opening sequences do

One of the main purposes of a opening sequence is to intrest the audience to carry on watching the film. The most common way in which open sequences do this is by leaving a cliff hanger or enigma at the end. Also opening sequences estabblish time and place. They usually do this with establishing shots or by having a narrator or word captions. Opening scenes also reassure the audience of there chosen genre by locaton or characters. An opening sequence also set up an initial equlibriam which will be disrupted later. They also set up any key themes in the film which are linked to the ideologies in the film. Nearly all opening sequences introduce characters, usually the main one.

Preliminary Task & Reflection

Our peliminary task was to create a short piece of continuity filming with editing. During the filming we had to include; opening of a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, two characters exchanging a short piece of dialogue and shot/reverse shot with the 180-degree rule. Overall we think that our pelimanary task went very well. We think this because it flowed very well, a close up on the lips was used, we managed to keep one of the characters identidy hidden and the music which we added during editing adds alot of atmosphere. The one thing that worked really was the editing which we used. However things we could have improved on were; more close ups, volume/sound , closeness of the shots of the camera length of (especially the walking shot at the beggining), different types of camera shots and we should have taken a few more shots of each scene to see which one works best.

Initial Ideas For Project

Firstly, we thought of the different types of genre we could our project on. These are some of the genres we concidered doing for our project;
  • Action
  • Horror
  • Rom-com
  • Thriller
  • Adventure
  • Sci-fi
  • Comedy

After thinking about each of the genres and how we could use these in our opening sequence, we came up with the decission that sci-fi would be rather hard to complete because sci-fi relies heavily on special effects which we do not possess the correct equipment. We also decided that comedy would be one of the harder genres to do as its very hard to pull off and look good aswell as the fact that previous attempts at comedy failed miserably.
Next we came up with what we thought would work best in making an opening sequence without much special effects or experience in filming. The two categories of genre we were deciding on was Horror and/or Action. The reason for this was we seen previous opening sequences to these genres and felt they worked extremly well, also we both enjoy watching these types of films. Therefore we already had many ideas floating around our heads because of watching action and horror films. We also had our own ideas aswell as adopted ideas from other films.

After concidering both types of genre, Action or Horror we finally decided that we would focus our opening sequence on the Action genre. The reason for this is, after question people we found out that people enjoyed watching action films over horror films, so this show that already our opening sequence would be popular. Another reason why we choose this genre was we already knew alot about action films, with watching them alot. Also we thought our talents suited action films more then horrors, becauase with horror its hard to pull it off and make it look good because of the blood & special effects. Where as you can do a good action film without special effects, as long as very thing is polished off well and the camera angle and everythign looks good.
